Press Release: (Vineyard Haven)
Louisa Gould Gallery is pleased to
announce an extraordinary show, "The Permanent Collection of the
Martha's Vineyard Art Association (MVAA)
." Please join us
for a reception from 4-6pm on Saturday, Nov. 8.
Over the years, the MV Art Association's
Old Sculpin Gallery has assembled a unique collection of art made on
the Vineyard by established artists with Island connections. These artists
include: Hans Hoffman (1880-1998), Vaclav Vytlacil (1892-1984), Ruth
Appledorn Mead (1894-1994), William Abbe (1916-1983), Mary Drake Coles
(1903-1993), Julius Delbos (1879-1970), Frank C. Wright (1904-1982),
and Marion Freeman Wakeman (1891-1953), and others. Living Island artists
include Renee George O'Sullivan, Fred Messersmith, Ray Ellis, and Louisa
Gould. The Collection artistically shows the changes on the Island over
the last century.
This show at Louisa Gould Gallery marks
the first time that selected works from the MVAA Collection are on view
in Vineyard Haven. The endeavor to exhibit this Collection in various
island venues during the "off season" has been funded in part
by a grant from the MV Local Cultural Council. In order to preserve
these works for future generations, the MVAA has been working diligently
to promote the Collection in order to raise funds for the purchase of
archival materials for restoration and for the reframing of certain
pieces of art.
Please note that a selection of the
Permanent Collection will be for sale. This is a rare opportunity not
only to view the Permanent Collection, which is an "Island Treasure,"
but to purchase some of these works. Proceeds of the sale of these works
goes to the MVAA and the Martha's Vineyard Preservation Trust. The show
is on exhibit from Nov 6th-Nov 16th and online at www.louisagould.com.
Please note that the online show represents
only a portion of the work that is for sale.
