Denys Wortman Sr.

Denys Wortman was born in Saugerties, New York in 1887. Mr. Wortman studied at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art with Kenneth Hayes Miller and Robert Henri.
He exhibited in the Armory Show of 1913 and in 1924 he began work for The World (which became The World-Telegram and Sam) where he stayed until his retirement in 1954. For thirty years, six days a week, Mr. Wortman produced a new drawing for "Metropolitan Movies," his newspaper cartoon depicting episodes in the lives of an assortment of colorful characters, the most notable being "Mopey Dick and The Duke."
Mr. Wortman was president of the Society of Illustrators from 1935 to 1938 and remained very active in the Society until his death in 1958.
