PRESS RELEASE: (Martha’s Vineyard) Louisa Gould Gallery proudly presents a new art exhibit at the gallery featuring Gray Park and Robert Jewett’s art. The show will open on Friday July 20th with an opening from 5 to 7pm. The show will run until Aug 3rd. Both artist are nationally respected artists and bring to the gallery a diverse range of art and texture. Robert F. (Bob) Jewett is well know for his ceramics, however this will be the first time he has exhibited his wood collages. The perfect complement to the wood art is Gray Parks luscious large oil paintings.
Bob Jewett will show ten new wall wood collages. “The key images in my art come from growing up on Martha’s Vineyard. Engagement with the sea naturally generates an awareness of the layers of an ever-changing nautical landscape. As a sailor and an artist, I am interested not only in the surface of the water, but also in what happens beneath. The incredible power that remains mostly hidden from our view is a dynamic force, revealing itself in its fluid interactions with surfaces, objects, and light. We see its power exposed on the surface waters of Woods Hole and the Middle Ground, in the tidal pull on buoys, and in the turbulent swirls around the hull of a boat.” Bob Jewett has created ten masterful wood collages made out of various woods especially for this show. In addition, his earth tone ceramic bowls; plates and vases provide another element of texture to the show.
Bob Jewett studied pottery with renowned potter Warren Mackenzie and ceramic sculpture with Curtis Hoard at the University of Minnesota where he received his M.F.A. in ceramics and sculpture in 1972. Since then Bob has taught ceramics at St. Paul Academy and Summit School. He has shown extensively in the Midwest with shows at the Minneapolis Art Institute and the Tweed Museum. Bob currently lives year-round on the Vineyard with his wife Peggy.
Gray Park IV (Gray) Gray has spent a week painting on island for this show. Gray paints exclusively plein air. His paintings elicits the light and color of each particular day and hour he painted his chosen island landscape. “I particularly enjoy painting on the Vineyard, this year I have chosen to paint the various shades of blues and greens in the ocean. The colors of the water
Are unique on the Vineyard.” Gray Park. Gray has painted seven new oils on canvas for this show.
Gray Park at the age of 36 has won a handful of national awards, including the John Stobart National Award of Excellence at the International Mystic Invitational show. Gray has been painting since he was nine. He paints in his own style, bucking traditional layering techniques, it is in this way that he can truly capture in a loose representational way the light, color and feeling
Of a Vineyard landscape in oils. Gray’s sweeping vistas of the Gay Head beach, Sengekontacket Pond and State beach provide a moment of Vineyard life and light.
