(Martha’ Vineyard)   Louisa Gould Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibit, “Vineyard Reflection” featuring new works by Joan Kennedy, Anthony Benton Gude, Kate Huntington, James Murray and Kathryn Wronski.  The exhibit opens on July 21st and runs through August 2nd.  The opening reception will take place on Saturday, July 23rd from 5 – 7 pm.  Please stop by to meet the artists, enjoy light refreshments, and listen to live music by Michael Haydn.

This exhibition includes works that reflect the artist’s interpretation of the Island in their own media – oils on canvas, board or masonite, and watercolors on paper.  These five artists call upon their experiences here and have uniquely captured the essence of the Vineyard - whether it is the warm summer months, the brisk fall days, or the dead of winter, and even the playful side of spring.

Joan Kennedy, a long-time summer resident, has created a number of brilliantly lit and colored oils on canvas that genuinely show her love of this beautiful island.  As Joan states “here, on the Island, even deep shadows have lighted particles of moisture reflecting out and around, which help create the space so that the scene becomes pieces of lighted air with sea over land, lighted further by a grime-free sky. As she describes it, “peace and unity” can be found within each of her newly executed works, much like here on the Vineyard.

With strong ties to the Vineyard, Anthony Benton Gude has depicted his keen sense of the natural beauty found here in his new oils and watercolors.  Anthony describes his new works by saying “they were done in late fall and mid winter here on the Island capturing the vivid fall colors and then the stark harshness of the winter landscape.”  The image, Chilmark Overlook, reveals a simple and pure view harkening to the images of his late grandfather and famous artist, Thomas Hart Benton and his time spent in Chilmark.

Kate Huntington, from Providence, R.I. and frequent visitor to the Vineyard, offers a selection of light, bright, and refreshing canvases of many favorite summer pastimes – the beach, on a sailboat, or wading in the water.  Her canvases suggest a more casual, relaxed feeling and invite the viewer in to savor the simple and pleasurable life here.  As Kate explains, “I wanted to keep the compositions somewhat simple, emphasizing these wonderful shapes that are lush inlets and cliffs set against fields of subdued color. To add a little more flavor, I’ve chosen to include periods of bright colors in the form of beach chairs or people just hanging around with all their vibrant beach paraphernalia.”

Another visitor with family ties on the Vineyard, Kathryn Wronski joins this show with her fun and playful images.  Kathryn portrays her subjects in a lighthearted manner with smiling dogs, enchanting cows, and brightly colored backgrounds.  Kathryn travels here from the West Coast and brings her energized and fanciful canvases to share.  She explains, “she has returned to the island every year since moving to the West Coast.  With camera always nearby, she photographs the animals of the island to supply herself with wonderful images to use for painting throughout the year.”

James Murray a summer resident will showcase a handfull of sculptures made out of wood and steel. James also works in bronze which are on display at Louisa Gould. James is always creating from exquisite pieces of wood, and sometimes found objects, that result in extraordinary works of art.
